Andrés Iniesta’s joy at winning the World Cup turned sour yesterday when his wife confronted him about his claim that the victory was “the best moment of my life”.
Iniesta let the comment slip to a variety of journalists after the game, in between bouts of running around with David Villa on his shoulders and stroking the trophy like a newborn baby.
Wife Karen Iniesta told friends in the couple’s home town of Torremolinos: “I can’t believe he said that. He knows bloody well the best moment of his life was marrying me, followed by when he first met me. I shall be having words, for sure.”
On hearing of Mrs. Iniesta’s disapproval, Iniesta released a statement which said “I apologise from the bottom of my heart to the love of my life for the silly remarks I made in the heat of moment. Te amo.”
The Spanish football team’s doctor also sought to play down the incident, saying “It’s very common to get carried away and say things you don’t mean after a glorious sporting moment, when the endorphins kick in and the serotonin levels rocket.
“Indeed, after winning a very long game of Canasta I once told the friends I was playing with that it felt better than the day my children were born. In normal circumstances I definitely wouldn’t say that.”
Iniesta is not the first footballer to spark controversy with a football-relationship comparison. Alan Shearer’s comment during his playing days that scoring a goal was better than sex was picked up by the press when his wife told reporters that from where she stood, he was probably correct.
