HARRY REDKNAPP and his family have said their remarkable run of form in recent weeks can be put down to their purchase of a Nintendo Wii console (sports package + three extra controllers).
Speaking after his Tottenham side beat Liverpool 4-2, Redknapp said that family days playing Super Smash Brothers had help him ‘learn how to laugh again’ after tough times at Portsmouth where Peter Storrie refused to let him upgrade from his PS2.
“At Pompey I would come home after a tough day talking to David James about existential goalkeeping techniques, and have to play Grand Theft Auto III, which I had already completed,” said Redknapp, who also put West Ham’s successful battle against relegation in 1997 down to the purchase of a Neo Geo at Easter.
“Since I made the move to Wii I can unwind with Jamie, Louise and the other lad over a quick Star Cup GP. The strains a tough day at the training ground teaching Heurelho Gomes not to punch his own players just drains away when you can sit down and look awkward playing computer games in front of a film crew.”
Other members of the Redknapp clan have also seen the benefits of family days pretending to ten pin bowl. Jamie has hit a punditry purple patch, and during the half-time analysis of Arsenal v Manchester United referred to the Wii as a “top, top console” and “absolutely quality Richard”, to the delight of many television critics.
Meanwhile Louise’s recent single A Step From Heaven ‘08 has stormed into the charts at number 86, a decade high for the ex-Eternal singer. Jamie’s older brother Mark has also said that sitting alongside his successful kin and watching them have fun in their expensive living room is a career peak. He hopes that one day he will be “allowed to stay over”.
But celebrity gossip site sickeningvultures.co.uk has suggested that the advert gives a revealing glimpse into the homelife of the Redknapps. Towards the conclusion of the promo Louise tells Jamie “I love beating you”, which showbiz commentators say betrays the tensions at the heart of the Redknapp’s marriage, or their fondness for sado-masochistic sex activities.
On top of this, cousin Frank Lampard had to take time out from football last season after going into mourning when he mistakenly deleted his character on Wii Tennis when on the verge of completing the game. He has since honoured this moment by pointing metaphorically at the attic, where he used to go and play on his Wii after training, whenever he scores a goal.
