Top referee branded a “wanker”

THE FA are to investigate claims made at the weekend that match official Keith Hill is a “wanker”. The accusations surfaced at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road, after the referee sent off Orient’s JJ Melligan in the 33rd minute of their game against Carlisle United.

Amid emotionally charged scenes, O’s fan Nick Talbot, 29, sensationally exclaimed “you wanker!” as the referee produced his red card for a rash two-footed challenge. When Carlisle wrapped up the game with a third goal just after half time Talbot repeated his accusation, mumbling “wanker” once more as he made for the exit.

It is not known what evidence Talbot has for his claims, but he will be asked to present his case to the FA at Soho Square in a hearing on April 9. If the charges are upheld Hill would be struck from the referee’s register with immediate effect. Being a wanker is prohibited under Law 7.5b of the referee’s charter along with being a bastard, blind or a stupid woman.

Mr Hill, 43, has refused to comment on the allegations so far, but his lawyer released a statement on Monday saying: “Keith is sickened and appalled by this accusation, which he unequivocally denies, and plans to fight every step of the way.

“While my client may have experimented in his youth, we stringently defend his right to a private life before he became a public figure. We ask that you respect his and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

However, more questions were raised last night when it was revealed that this is not the first time the accusation has been levelled at Hill. Rumours of being a wanker have surrounded him since he failed to play advantage when Carl Asaba was through on goal during an Auto-Windscreens Shield tie between Brentford and Shrewsbury in 1997. “The ref…” sang the crowd at Griffin Park. “…eree’s a wanker”, they continued, with some even pointing at the official to eliminate any ambiguity as to which referee they were describing.
